In 2018, National Walk to School Day was October 10. The first National Walk to School Day was held in 1997 and the first-ever National Bike to School Day was celebrated in 2012 across the USA. This year, in the U.S., 5132 schools registered to participate, with 340 schools in Florida, 46 schools in Brevard and including 4 in Viera–Manatee, Quest and Ralph Williams Elementary Schools and Viera Charter School.
The event addresses issues for communities, like creating safer, more walkable routes to school; building a sense of community spirit; and inspiring families to use their feet for the school commute more often.
The National Center for Safe Routes to School, the coordinating agency for Walk and Bike to School Day, is committed to empowering communities to make walking and bicycling to school a safe, appealing, preferred choice for families.
Next year’s Walk to School Day is October 2, 2019.
